Year 4 Home Learning

Year 5 Home Learning

Welcome to the Tigers’ webpage!

The Tiger class is Year 4 and 5 at Newtown School. Our teacher is Miss Lynch and Mrs Hunt teaches us for half a day on Thursdays. Miss Hodgson and Miss Bradley are our teaching assistants.

This term our topic is Rainforests. We will be studying ‘The Great Kapok Tree’ by Lynne Cherry in English and using it in Geography and Science to help us learn about biomes, deforestation and animals and their habitats. In Art we will be focusing on portraits and in DT we will be learning about puppets. Find our curriculum map here (link).

We do quiet reading every day and read with a teacher as many times as possible throughout the week. Reading should also be done at home at least three times a week and signed by an adult. When we complete a book we do an Accelerated Reader quiz to check our understanding. In school we have a ‘Starbooks’ bookmark. Every time we complete a book and score over 70% on an Accelerated Reader Quiz we get a stamp. Once we have 10 stamps we are entitled to a ‘Starbooks’ hot chocolate!

Spellings and Times Tables

Every Friday we have a spelling test and a times tables test. Each child has a sheet with all the spellings and all the times tables they will be learning. They are split into lists. The list of times tables or spellings your child is learning for the next test is marked by a coloured sticker. Once your child has scored 9 or 10 out of 10 for spellings or 11 or 12 out of 12 for times tables, they will move onto the next list. Once they have completed a list it will be marked off with a star. Some spellings and times tables are repeated to ensure consolidation.

As well as practising for spellings and times tables tests and reading at home, we expect children to spend time on Maths Whizz ( and Times Tables Rock Stars ( Teachers can check how much has been done and also set challenges on TTRS so make sure you take part! If at any time you lose your login please let a member of staff know or email

In class we are split into teams: red, blue, yellow and green. We earn points through making good choices, doing good work, being a good friend or any other time an adult thinks we deserve one. Whichever team fills their cup first gets a prize each from the prize box.

We have PE on Monday and Thursday. Please wear your PE kit on these days as we are currently not using the changing rooms.

If you have any questions or queries please get in touch. A member of staff greets the children in the morning and lets them out at the end of the day and you are welcome to have a quick chat then. For a longer discussion please just ask.
